I originally decided to create an online exhibition on photography. I felt this topic was too broad and I couldn’t limit myself to just a few techniques. So I changed my topic and created an online exhibition on pop art. I decided on pop art as it is something I am interested in and feel it’s a topic not many people know a great deal on. I originally used Flickr as my platform, however it did not meeting my needs. I found Flickr to be difficult to use due to layout constraints and licensing issues. The reason I was having licensing issues is because I was saving art work to my computer and uploading them into Flickr. Needless to say I quickly deleted the images and searched for a new way of creating my online exhibition. In addition to the constraints in Flickr, I was unable to include many text fields and the text that I did have was limited by a word count. I wanted to include links in my exhibition but again I could not modify in HTML to give the link a desired title. Overall Flickr did not have the features I was after for this particular project. After many attempts at using Flickr as my platform, I decided to start over by using a blog layout instead. I did a quick Google search for a blog and Blogger was the first to appear in the search results. I decided to go with Blogger as it was a 3 step easy sign in process.
I feel for this project Blogger was the way to go, mainly due to layout and it is less constricting. Although I did not use Flickr as my platform, I still used it to assist with my exhibition, by conducting an advanced flickr search. This allowed me to search for images that are licensed under creative commons and link them back to my blog page (This also illuminated all licensing issues that I originally had with Flickr). The advanced Flickr search had various photos, videos and other interesting things which I have incorporated into my exhibition.
Overall, I feel I have learnt a lot about Networked Media and due to this project. I have now created my own medium which has allows me to express my ideas and views on pop art and communicate this to others via an online exhibition.
